BNP terms budget as typical, anti-poor

DHAKA: Opposition BNP is reluctant to praise the proposed budget of FY 2012-13 placed in the parliament on Thursday.

Senior leaders of the party criticized the budget proposal while expressing their views on proposed budget to banglanews Friday.

They termed it as the ‘anti-well-wisher’ of the country and its men. They also termed it as the ‘monotonous and anti-poor’ budget.

Besides, the leaders alleged that the government has placed the budget to secure their electoral interests.

According to the economical view, the budget is full of flaws. This budget won’t be able to serve any contribution in poverty elimination, employment generation or inflation reduction, they added.

The leaders intended to propose a definite research about the budget.

The party is not interested yet to stage any programme in this regard despite having their aversion to the budget.

Criticizing the budget, standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed said the budget is as usual and not for the people whilst it will help the government to fulfill its electoral interests.

The budget does not have any space of investment increase and any way to wipe out economical volatility and instability. No initiatives were taken in the budget to solve unemployment problem and poverty reduction, he added.

Imitating Khaleda Zia’s comment on the budget, another standing committee member MK Anwar told banglanews, the budget concerns the next general election which won’t be able to maintain commodity price-hike, establish democracy, improve law and order situation as it is an anti-mass budget.

The press conference was addressed, among others, by Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, Information Minister Abul Kalam Azad, Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman.
