DHAKA: Police on Thursday submitted charge sheet against 25 pro-BNP lawyers in a case filed for vandalism and creating chaos at sessions and district judges’ courts on May 22.
Abidul Islam, a sub-inspector at Kotwali Police Station, also the investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet under the Speedy Trial (Law and Order Disruption) Act to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court of Dhaka in the afternoon.
The court fixed June 13 for hearing on acceptance of the charge sheet.
Earlier in the day, the lawyers surrendered before the court of first Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Shahidul Islam Faruque seeking bail in compliance with an HC order.
Later, the court fixed June 3 for hearing bail petitions by 22 of the lawyers accused in the case as the lawyers’ bail term granted by the High Court will expire on June 3.
Some 99 unnamed pro-BNP lawyers were sued on May 23 for vandalizing two windows of Dhaka district and metropolitan session judge’s courts earlier in the day.
SI Makbul Hossain of Kotwali Thana filed the case under speedy trial tribunal act accusing 29 named, including Advocate Sanaullah Mia, Borhanuddin, Masud Ahmed Talukder, Mohsin Mia and 77 unnamed persons.
On May 22, the pro-BNP lawyer went on a rampage in the Judge Court citing allegation that the Awami government is interfering on judiciary.
The lawyers under the banner of Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum Dhaka-unit vandalized glasses of widows and kicked the doors of the court room of Metropolitan Session Judge Jahurul Haque.
They also brought out protest procession in Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Metropolitan Session Judge Court and district Judge court premises.
