Azeem Rafiq becomes first Asian to lead Yorkshire

London: Karachi-born Azeem Rafiq became the first Asian origin cricket to lead English county team Yorkshire on Friday. The 21-year off-spinner, who was leading the side in place of regular captain Andrew Gale, also became the youngest ever player to captain a county side.

Rafiq came from Pakistan to England as a boy. Throughout his cricket career so far, Rafiq has always been a captain. He has led England`s Under-15 and Under-19 sides, the latter at the World Cup in 2010.

Rafiq’s side won the match by 12 runs with Rafiq taking one for 36 and catching South Africa`s Herschelle Gibbs, who top-scored with 76 in a Durham innings.
