DHAKA: Some unruly Army officers wanted to capture power and make ministers the selected senior officers by toppling the democratic government.
Intelligence agencies have got a list of the members of a possible shadow-government on the laptop of Lt Col (retd) Ehsan Yusuf.
The main plotters of the Army coup are Lt Col (retd) Ehsan Yusuf and expatriate businessman Ishrak Ahmed.
They were arrested on specific information after two days of disclosure of the conspiracy on December 15.
Detectives have rescued many sensitive information of the Army coup on Lt Col (retd) Ehsan’s laptop. He also planned to bring some reformation in Army after ousting the government.
He thought introducing such a facility that the members of armed forces can get married anytime.
Ehsan Yusuf was sent into forced retirement during the BNP-led four-party alliance government. He got back his job after AL government took power and became Lieutenant Colonel getting promotion.
A gazette was published in this regard on December 31, 2008 and his job period ended on March 5, 2009.
Ehsan Yusuf is the nephew of Major General Monjur, who was involved with killing of Ziaur Rahman. Investigators got Major Ziaul Haque and Maj Zakir’s involvement in the Army coup after quizzing Ehsan.
On January 19, Brigadier General Masud Razzak of Personal Services Department of Army said, “Some unruly army officers, 15-16 in numbers, were involved in the attempt to oust the democratic government in December last.”
He also said the involved persons would be punished under section 31 of the military law.
Sources said law enforcing agencies are trying to arrest businessman Ishrak Ahmed and Major Syed Ziaul Haque.
The investigators found information that Major Zia used a roaming UK mobile SIM card to communicate with the army officers about the plot.
Investigators also found the mobile phone conversation between Major Zia and 11 officers of different ranks. He tried to inspire them to move towards Dhaka with firearms.
The army force has sent the photograph of Major Zia to all cantonments to trace him. Investigators have confirmed that Ziaul has close linkage with Hizbut Tahrir.
Besides, investigation is underway to find out those involved in the failed coup conspiracy. It will be completed by the middle of February.
The suspected officers include a Major General, a Brigadier, a Captain and the rest are Major in rank.
GOC of Comilla-33 division Major General Kamruzzaman and his family were attached with Dhaka Cantonment log area for his suspected involvement with the coup.
Commander of Savar 71 ranking bridged Brigadier Gen Tarikul Alam also among the suspected. He was scheduled to go India to participate a training course. He was also withdrawn from Savar and brought to cantonment log area.
