National Bank to lend info-ladies

DHAKA: National Bank ltd will provide loan to the Information Lady of D.net on easy terms and conditions so that they can be employed and stand beside the neglected and poor people of the villages.

A deal in this regard was inked between D.net, National Bank and Fair Price International in a city hotel Wednesday.

Acting Managing Director of National Bank M Badiul Alam, executive director of Dnet Ananna Rayhan and managing director of Fair Price International Urmi Lohani singed the deal on behalf their respective sides.

Addressing the programme, Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman said, “Our women are being lagged behind in getting loan although it was necessary to bring them in the main track of the economy for stable growth and BB has given priority for lending women entrepreneurs.”

Some 5,000 women were lent with Tk 381 crore as SME loan by BB, he added.

He also told the audiences that the banks were asked to lend in cluster approach system.

M Badiul Alam said, “National Bank always gives importance to small and medium industries and giving priority in lending the women entrepreneurs.”

Ananna Rayhan said, “Some 15,000 information ladies can be employed through this project by 2016 which will need some Tk 275 crore credit.”

With executive committee president Parvin Haque Sikder in the chair, the programme was addressed, among others, by BB general manager Sukomal Signh Chowdhury and executive director of ‘Manusher Jonno Foundation’ Shahin Anam.

The info-ladies of the country are rendering their technological services to the people of remote area.

At present, some 53 women entrepreneurs of 18 districts rendering various services like—sending email for others, helping others to talk with their relatives over Skype, health services and computer training.

This ‘Info Lady’ service was first introduced in 2004 by Development Research Network (D.net). They trained five women for rendering various technological services to the village people daily.

Later in 2010, ‘Promoting Info-lady for Building Inclusive Information and Knowledge System’ project came in operation which was financed by ‘Manusher Jonno Foundation’.
