DHAKA: A Dhaka court on Tuesday transferred all relevant documents of the vehicle torching case against BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and 45 other 18-party leaders to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate`s Court.
Metropolitan Magistrate MD Erfan Ullah passed the order as the defence lawyers filed a no-confidence petition against the Judge.
The defence lawyers filed the no-confidence petition against Erfan Ullah as he simultaneously rejected their two petitions during the day`s hearing.
In the petition, they claimed that they will not get justice from the court as it rejected their petitions seeking adjournment of the hearing on charge framing in the arson case.
On April 30, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir among a number of alliance leaders were sued for their alleged involvement in cocktail explosion at secretariat, vehicle vandalism and arson in PM office area during Sunday’s dawn-to-dusk hartal.
Police filed two cases with Tejgaon and Shahbagh Thanas. Fakhrul was made accused in the both cases.
On May 16, a Dhaka Court asked the authority concerned to send 33 leaders of BNP-led 18-party including BNP acting secretary general Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to jail after rejecting their bail prayers.
On the day, some 33 leaders of BNP-led 18-party alliance surrendered before the CMM Court and sought bail in a case filed for torching vehicle in front of PM’s office during hartal.
On May 23, Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judge Jahurul Haque sent the 33 opposition leaders to jail rejecting their bail pleas for the second time.
On May 27, the High Court granted bail for six weeks to five BNP lawmakers in a vehicle torching case in front of PM’s office during hartal.
They are—MK Anwar, barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Col. (Rtd.) Oli Ahmed, barrister Andalib Rahman Partha and Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anne.
Meanwhile, the court issued a rule upon the government for one week asking why the other detained leaders should not be grated bail.
On June 14, Fakhrul among nine BNP leaders were freed on bail in a case filed for cocktail explosion at the secretariat during hartal.
