Hillary’s tour makes Delhi busy

NEW DELHI : The central government of Indian is being active again for Teesta deal convincing Paschimbanga Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during Kolkata visit of US Foreign Secretary Hillary Clinton.

Water Resources Minister of the country Paban Bansal said a new detailed proposal about Teesta deal would be placed before Mamata in Kolkata to convince her over the matter.

Hillary will leave Dhaka for Kolkata Monday to meet with Mamata.

Diplomatic sources said Hillari, at first, would meet with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and discuss different issues, including Teesta deal.

Later, she will meet Mamata and inform her about Bangladesh’s concern over Teesta water sharing issue.

A south block source of Delhi said Teesta deal is necessary for Sheikh Hasina as the next general election of the county is imminent.

Delhi wants to execute the deal six months prior to the general election of Bangladesh. In this regard, Dhaka is also giving pressure Delhi.

Meanwhile, Indian External Affairs Minister SM Krishna Friday discussed the matter with Mamata.

Conversely Mamata said, “I understand the significance of geographical relations regarding the deal. But, I have to stand for Paschimbanga as I am the chief of the state.”

If the central government can assure her about the interest of Paschimbanga, she does not have any problem, she added.

Early Tuesday, a meeting was held between Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Tariq Ahmad Karim and Indian Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, which included Teesta deal.

In addition to diplomatic efforts, political solution is also functioning concurrently regarding the matter.

In the meantime, Indian water resources secretary Dhruva Juti Singh and former intelligence official RK Shukla and also mediator between Bangladesh and India on Teesta deal discussed the matter with Pachimbanga chief secretary in Kolkata.
