TANGAIL: An eight-hour hartal, called by district Chhatra League in protest against killing of its leader Abdul Kader Bapon, was observed amid stray violence on Wednesday.
Agitated Chhatra League activists brought out protest procession in phases from 6:00am in different points of the district town.
Besides, they ransacked numbers of business organizations at Betka Godown Bazar.
All shops, business organizations and school colleges in municipality area remained closed during early hours of hartal.
Panic mounted among people of the district.
Additional police were deployed in key points of the town but they were seen inactive, banglanews correspondent reports.
Chhatra League put barricade on the roads by setting fire on tyres.
No inter-district vehicle left Tangail Bus Stand from morning.
On Tuesday afternoon, injured Bapon succumbed to his injuries at Anam Medical College Hospital of Savar while he was undergoing treatment.
On January 20, a half-day hartal was observed in the district protesting the murder of Faruk Ahmed, the Freedom Fighter and Awami League leader.
During the hartal the supporters of hartal and anti-hartal groups locked into clash, leaving Bapan critically injured.
Later, Bapan was rushed to Tangail General Hospital. As his condition was deteriorating he was transferred to Anam Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday.
