DINAJPUR: The dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports is underway Saturday in Phulbari as local administration imposed Section 144 to impede committees’ Friday programme.
No vehicles are plying on Dinajpur-Dhaka highway.
Shops remained closed during the hartal hours, a spot account said.
A good number of police personnel have been deployed in different points.
Phulbari Thana OC Farhad Imrul Kayes told banglanews, “Police personnel have been deployed to avert any untoward situation.”
Mayor of Phulbari municipality Murtaza Sarker Manik told banglanews, “The inhabitants of Phulbari are observing blockade and hartal called by the National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports.”
“The blockade will continue till our demands are met. We will convene more protest programme if necessary,” he added.
Earlier on Friday afternoon, Member secretary of the committee Anu Muhammad made the announcement.
Anu Muhammad said, “Hartal has been called in protest against imposing section 144 to stop committees’ programme and we will announce more protest programme nationwide if necessary.”
Earlier, the committee called a meeting protesting the government’s recent move for creating environment for Asia Energy for starting open pit mining.
Earlier in the day, the local administration imposed Section 144 in Phulbari upazila of the district as the Committee convened programmes on Friday.
