DHAKA: GMG Airlines Ltd, the largest private airline of the country, is set to cease all of its flight operations from March 30 citing its precarious financial situation.
The GMG Airlines has taken the decision for what it called ‘strategic restructuring against rising fuel price and competitive global market’.
They have already terminated a number of its employees from their jobs.
However, the authority said they would resume their operations within one year with new services for the customers.
Confirming the matter, Director (Customer care and Marketing) of GMG Airlines Asif Ahmed told banglanews, “We have shut down our operations temporary.”
He added: “But, we are going to resume the operation within a very short span of time.” Replaying to a query, he said, “Hopefully, we will start within one year.”
According to sources, the employees of the airline are not getting their regular salary along with over times and other allowances from last two months.
Many of them have already left their jobs while the rest are trying to find new job, the sources added.
The authorities of the airlines said all customers would get back their ticket fares through GMG sells offices during the temporary shut down and the employees would get their compensations as per the labour act.
GMG Airlines was an airline in Bangladesh. It was the country`s first and largest private airline having been established in 1997 with its head office in the AAA Tower in Nikunjo-2 Dhaka, Bangladesh.
It operated both domestic and international flights. Its primary hub was Shahjalal International Airport, located in Dhaka. in 2009 Beximco Group bought a major stake in GMG Airlines and had injected cash into it.
GMG Airline was established in 1997 and started domestic operations on 6 April 1998. International services were launched six years later on 8 September 2004, with a service from Chittagong to Kolkata.
GMG began regular flights to Bangkok, Delhi and Kathmandu on 20 October 2006. It started services to Kuala Lumpur on 24 January 2007. The airline started its operation to the Middle East with daily flights to Dubai on 1 February 2008. In July of 2010, GMG initiated flights to Jeddah and Riyadh.
They also served Abu Dhabi and Karachi as well as domestic stations Jessore and Sylhet
