DHAKA : University of Dhaka will hold a special convocation on Wednesday to confer an honorary Doctor of Laws degree on Irina Bokova, the first woman Director General of the UNESCO.
President M Zillur Rahman, also Chancellor of the university, will award her with the Doctor of Laws degree.
The convocation ceremony will be held at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of the university.
Dhaka University authorities have decided to confer Doctor of Laws degree on Irina for her outstanding contribution to education and science, said Professor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, Vice-Chancellor of the university.
Irina Bokova, born on July 12, 1952 in Sofia, Bulgaria, is a Bulgarian diplomat and politician.
She has been the Director-General of UNESCO since November 15, 2009.
She is the first woman to have been elected head of the UNESCO.
She was also Minister of Foreign Affairs and Ambassador of Bulgaria.
Having graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, the University of Maryland (Washington) and the John F. Kennedy School of Government (Harvard University), in 1977 Irina Bokova joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria, where she was responsible for human rights issues.
As a polyglot (Bulgarian, English, French and Spanish), she was Minister for Foreign Affairs and Coordinator of Bulgaria-European Union relations (1995-1997) and subsequently Ambassador of Bulgaria (2005-2009) to France, Monaco and UNESCO.
