Return of the Prodigal Uncle

The above quote was delivered to an Agantuk; a stranger, to the house a nice who was unknown to the niece herself. The niece and her husband neither could tell him to leave the house as he claimed to be the uncle or could tolerate him in the house.

As a result, the niece and her husband had to spend a lot to entertain their uncle. He was rather a prodigal uncle for them. This was the story of the film "Agantuk" by Satyajit Ray.

Another meaning of the ‘prodigal’ is repentant.

I am not sure whether the word has rightly picked for this essay or not.

It was perceivable what happened today at the residence of minister without portfolio who is very naturally to return to politics and also keen to get back his ever achieved Railway Ministry. Mr. Suranjit Sengupta was waiting for this moment.

It is the moment of exoneration as our Anti-Corruption Commission and the RW Departmental investigation found no involvement of Mr. Gupta in Railwaygate money scam. In Fact, the highest authority (ACC) to investigate corruption maintained that he was not involved in money scandal. What else anyone require to come back to politics and get back his position in the ministry?

Suranjit Sengupta came up with the intention to come back in politics after a few days respite. He also wanted to get back the ministry if the Prime Minister allows. He very rightly declared that the politics of 55 years cannot go away within 55 seconds.

Mr. Gupta kept up his words that he made a month ago that would stay away from politics until he came `clear` through investigation terming it a "break" in his political career. He is now ‘clear’ and will return to politics. What’s wrong with it?

In his 55 years politics he was almost all time parliamentarian. He is also the MP for the 7th time. He is very prominent parliamentarian in and outside of the parliament. He is famous for his legal acumen on various legal, judicial and constitutional affairs of the country.

It is our state practice to form an investigation committee after and problematic incident is happened. We are famous in the world to form investigation committee in deed. How many investigation committees have been formed in our country is an issue to investigate. And moreover, very unfortunately, very few reports of those investigation committees have come to light. And last but not the least, in how many incidents, action has been taken based upon the report is a big question.

Above all, there has almost always been question about the committee itself and its activities. In many cases, the committee has been formed with the department officers. We have observed in few cases that there has not been any independent and judicial investigation in to the matter. Thus the veracity of the investigation was always questionable to the people. In most cases, the people could not rely the investigation and thus the trueness of the report was always debatable. Another purpose to form the investigation committee is to calm the instantaneous situation and inter the issue forever.

However, we do not want raise all these question on the incumbent investigation report. At least, the report has come to light. Not only that, the report has appeared within a very short time, but also has exonerated our 55-years long politician. It has freed him from scandal.

Without asking those questions, we the very mundane citizenry of the country are waiting for the journo couple investigation report to come to light, though our Home Minister today has said that it cannot be said when it will come. Is it her ‘no interference’ or ‘negligence’ attitude to the issue? But we as a journalist observe a rather ‘no interest’ attitude from the government.

However, it is rather better for us to welcome Mr. Gupta in politics. Without this, what else we can do? Providing portfolio to him is the mandate of the PM. We have no mandate but to clap our leaders and to mourn for our dear ones who went to the kingdom of ‘no return’. Though he will return, but when the driver of his APS will return is an uncertainty, let alone Ilias Ali and so on.
