DHAKA: Jahangirnagar University (JU) Vice-Chancellor Professor M Anwar Hossain demanded judicial probe into the recent violence on the campus.

The VC raised the demand while addressing a press conference at the JU Senate Hall Saturday.

“The reasons behind unrest in the country’s public universities and motive of those who are destroying public property should be identified,” he said.

Professor Anwar suspected that anti-liberation forces might have fuelled such activities.

“We have to resist them as they want to hinder the development of the university,” he said.

He forewarned that punitive actions would be taken against those to be found involved in the incidents.

JU Pro-VC Prof M Farhad Hossain, Treasurer Prof M Nasir Uddin, Registrar Abu Bakar Siddique were, among others, present at the press conference.

Earlier on Thursday, the authorities closed the Jahangirnagar University till August 25 following clash between police and students.

The decision was taken on Thursday noon, sources said.

Earlier in the day, student-police clash left at least 30 students, including 7 police and 3 journalists.

The clash erupted when the students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) blockaded Dhaka-Aricha highway protesting the police firing on students that left five injured.

The angry students put barricade on the highway disrupting vehicular movement on the busy route till 2:30pm.

Five students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) were injured as police opened fire on them over arresting a student of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall of the varsity on early Thursday.

Sources said someone stabbed to injure Tahmidul Islam Likhon, student of Economics Dept, at about 10:00pm on Wednesday.

Later, Likhon was admitted to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar.

Police went to pick up Nahid, residential student of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall, on suspicion of stabbing Likhon when they locked in a clash with the students of the hall at about 12am.

In the meantime, police opened fire on the students, leaving five injured.

The university authorities claimed that police had not permission to open fire on the students.

The administration officers of Jahangirnagar University made the disclosure when they went to meet the angry students at about 6:30am.

Pro-VC Professor Farhad Hossain, Treasurer Professor Nasiruddin, Registrar Abu Bakkar Siddique and Proctor Professor Tapan Kumar Saha talked with the students.

“The firing on students is a derogatory incident,” said Pro-VC Farhar Hossain.
