DHAKA: The demonstrating teachers of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have postponed their decision to resign collectively till July 30 if its VC and Pro-VC don’t resign from their post.
BUET teachers’ association president Dr Mujibur Rahman told banglanews, “We received a letter from former vice-chancellor of the varsity and attendees of ministry meeting on July 16 asking us to postpone the programme showing respect to the government.”
Following the letter, the mass resignation demonstration has been postponed till July 30, he added.
Association’s general secretary Ashraful Islam told banglanews, “We don’t withdraw us from demanding removal of VC and Pro-VC. It is our key demand. We have decided to postpone our decision to tender resignation papers collectively as the government has taken initiative to resolve the existing crisis of the university.”
Earlier in the morning, BUET teachers’ association resumed sit-in demonstration Saturday morning after a two-day break demanding resignation of its vice chancellor and pro-vice chancellor.
However, the teachers gave ultimatum that they will resign collectively if the VC is not removed within 4pm on Sunday.
The teachers made such warning just 40 minutes after a meeting with Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on July 16.
“I will not stay in the post more days. So the government is searching the next VC of BUET,” incumbent VC Dr SM Nazrul Islam said on Wednesday.
Sources said the government has made a list of possible persons for the post. Dr. Hossain Ali of Civil Engineering Dept, Saiful Islam of Electric Engineering Dept, Dr Quamrul Islam of Mechanical Engineering Dept and Dr Abu Sayed Wayes Karani were emphasized in the list.
The crisis occurred in BUET when Teachers’ Association of the university started staging movements to press home their 16-point demand that include mainly the resignation of the VC and Pro-VC.
