DHAKA: Dhaka University Professor Dr Asif Nazrul got exemption from appearing before the court from now in a case of making a “provocative statement” at a TV talk show.
An HC bench comprising Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury and Justice Jahangir Hossain passed the order following an appeal made by Asif Nazrul’s lawyer Dr Kamal Hossain Thursday.
On March 15, the High Court summoned Dhaka University teacher Dr Asif Nazrul to appear before the court.
The court also issued a rule upon him to explain within two weeks why “he should not be charged” with sedition for his comment ‘any third force may come to power’ on a television talk show.
Meanwhile, the court requested 12 eminent lawyers to give their expert opinions as amicus curiae (friend of court).
Supreme Court lawyer Barrister M Nawsher Ali Mollah filed the writ petition with the HC against Asif Nazrul.
