THAKURGAON: Voting in Sadar Upazila of the district is underway amid a peaceful and festive mood.
The voting began at 8:00am on Wednesday and will continue till 4:00pm at a stretch.
One each of Awami League and BNP-back candidates are contesting for the post of chairman while two are vying for vice-chairman post and three for the post of vice-chairman reserved for women.
As many as 3,68,912 voters will exercise their right to franchise in 169 polling centres in a Pourashava and 21 Union Parishad of the upazila.
The administration has identified 49 out of 169 polling centres as `risky` in the upazila.
The election in the upazila was scheduled to hold on March 31.
On March 19, High Court issued an order to suspend the voting to the upazila after a vice-chairman candidate, Alamgir Hossain, filed a writ petition challenging the decision of the authorities concerned to change and add some 28 new polling centres.
Later the Election Commission suspended voting in the upazila on March 30, a day ahead of the fifth phase of the upazila elections following a the court order.
