SIRAJGANJ: Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor Dr Atiur Rahman said the bank has decided to allocate Tk 59,000 crore in SME sector as the small and medium entrepreneurs disburse their loans frequently while the riches have less inclination to loan repayment.
The central bank governor came up with the disclosure while addressing a view exchange meeting organized by Trust Bank at Shahid M Ali auditorium of the district Saturday.
In the meeting, microcredit was also distributed among the small entrepreneurs.
He also observed that once the banks sanctioned loan for the riches but now for the poor. “Now the banks are bound to open a branch in rural areas corresponding to a city branch,” he said.
The banks should provide loans in productive sectors, including farming instead of unproductive sectors. “Otherwise, the bank would not exist anymore,” the governor forewarned.
With Trust Bank managing director Shah Alam Sarwar in the chair, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by adviser to the governor Birupakkha Paul, Sirajganj Additional Deputy Commissioner Mokhlesur Rahman and loan recipient Hazrat Ali.
