DHAKA: The government is going to appoint officials of Bangladesh Air Force to all the posts of director of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB).
But the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States of America asked the authorities concerned not to appoint officials of armed forces to the posts.
Official sources said a new organogram of the organization is going to be framed with the provision of appointment of air-force officials to the important post in civil aviation.
Air-force officials will be put in all the key CAAB posts: chairman, member (administration) member (operation and planning), director (administration), director (flight and regulation), director (air traffic services), director (planning and training), director (CEMSU), director (civil aviation training centre) and director (Shahjajal International Airport) if the organogram is finalized.
Previously there had been obligation for giving appointment of air-force officials to the posts of member (operation and planning) and director (flight safety and regulations).
But, the sources said, the government has appointed BAF officials to the post of chairman of the civil aviation since 1982 though there was no provision.
Besides, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States asked the authorities concerned to recruit skilled, trained and professional manpower for the posts.
A high official of civil aviation, wishing anonymity, said all the civil-aviation authorities, including international organizations, urged the authorities concerned to appoint armed forces’ officials directly or indirectly to the posts.
“But Bangladesh is not doing so. The effect will not be good if we ignore the direction of the international organizations,” said the official.
Former member of the board of directors of Bangladesh Airlines Quazi Wahidul Alam told banglanews, “An important decision should be taken in this regard as per the directions of the internationals agencies.”
