DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and opposition Leader Khaleda Zia joined the programme of the ‘Armed Forces Day’ at Dhaka Cantonment on Wednesday afternoon.
The Armed Forces Day, marking the decisive offensive against the occupation forces at the culmination of the liberation war in 1971, is being observed.
The day’s programme on the occasion began with offering of special prayers after Fazr prayers at dawn at the mosques of all the cantonments, naval and air force bases and installations for the country’s welfare and prosperity and continuous improvement and progress of the armed forces.
On the eve of the day, President M Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages.
In the morning, the President and the Prime Minister laid wreaths at the “Shikha Anirban” at Dhaka Cantonment paying deep homage to the members of the Armed Forces, who laid down their lives in the country’s War of Liberation in 1971.
Later, Army Chief General Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan, Navy Chief Vice-Admiral Zahir Uddin Ahmed and Air Force Chief Air Marshall Mohammad Inamul Bari laid wreaths at Shikha Anirban.
State Minister for Liberation War Affairs, Prime Minister`s Defence Adviser, three chiefs of the Armed Forces, Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division, Principal Secretary and Secretary to the Prime Minister, Defence Secretary, Secretary to the Liberation War Affairs Ministry and civil and military officials will be present. In the afternoon, the Prime Minister, who is also the Defence Minister, were present at ‘Sena Kunja’ to mark the day.
