Letter to NBR, Banking Dept

Dr Yunus’ tax documents sought

DHAKA: The Cabinet Division sent letter to National Revenue Board (NBR) and Banking Department seeking documents regarding how much money brought by Dr Yunus from abroad under Wage Earner while he was MD of the Grameen Bank.

The cabinet also sought information regarding whether the money bringing would be considered as illegal, its amount, whether any wage earner tax facility took in bringing the money and how much it.
NBR has started investigating into tax evasion of Dr. Yunus.

In the letter, NBR chairman Nasir Uddin Ahmed was asked to submit detailed report soon about foreign income of Dr. Muhammad Yunus.  The cabinet did not mention any timeline for the submission.

Sources said after receiving the letter, NBR chairman on Monday asked Syed Aminul Karim, a member (Tax Policy) and Bashir Uddin Ahmed, a member (Tax Appeal and Waiver) to take necessary steps in this regard.

Besides, NBR on Monday sent letter to tax office asking it to submit reports after investigation into whether any misappropriation regarding tax of 54 sister concerns of Grameen Bank.

Revenue Board will investigate into tax evasion of Grameen Bank after receiving all information of the bank and its sister concerns from respective tax zones.

On August 2, the cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked NBR to submit report about how much money brought by Dr Yunus from abroad under Wage Earner during he was MD of the bank. Whether the money bringing would be considered as illegal, its amount, whether any age earner tax facility took in bringing the money and how much it.

Following the directives, cabinet division sent the letter.  

The bank began as a research project by Yunus and the Rural Economics Project at Bangladesh`s University of Chittagong to test his method for providing credit and banking services to the rural poor in 1976.

By a Bangladeshi government ordinance on October 2, 1983, the project was transformed into an independent bank.
