Ershad expresses concerned on food adulteration

DHAKA:  Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad Tuesday expressed profound concern over the unabated trend of food adulteration with toxic chemicals in the country.

The Jatiya Party lawmaker also demanded capital punishment of the culprits to protect the public health.

The former president came up with the assertion while addressing parliament during general discussion on the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2012-13.

He said mixing toxic chemicals like formalin with food items went rampant in the country and as a result no fruits are safe for human consumption at present.

Ershad added: “Make effective the capital punishment arranged in the law framed during Bangabandhu’s regime for those engaged in food adulteration as the crime reached an alarming level at this moment posing a dangerous threat to public health.”

The chief of the main alliance of the ruling grand-alliance also urged the government to take all out measurers to stop influx of Yaba methamphetamine tablets to save the new generation.

Regarding the much-talked about Rohingya refugee issue, the former President urged the United Nations (UN) to put pressure on Myanmar to restore peace there and tackle the situation.
