Army in Tangail, Rangpur polls: EC

DHAKA: Election Commissioner Javed Ali Sunday categorically said army would be deployed if it is required considering the latest situation in Tangail-3 by-polls and Rangpur City Corporation.

The election commissioner came up with the assertion while talking to journalists at the EC office.

The former army official said, “The army will be deployed in the by-polls if the demand of candidate concerned and common people of the area.”

He also told journalists: “I have recently visited Tangail-3 by-polls and Rangpur City Corporation electoral areas and talked to the common people of the areas.” “There is nothing happened to deploy army still,” he said.

The Tangail-3 by-polls will be held on November 18 which became vacated due to the death of Awami League MP Dr Matiur Rahman.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad declared the poll schedule at 11:45am on Monday at the EC head office.

On September 13, Awami League lawmaker Dr Matiur Rahman died at an Indian hospital.

As per Jatiya Sangshad secretariat release, the seat became vacated from September 14.
