DHAKA: The Election Commission (EC) on Monday started holding dialogues with some registered political parities in different phases.
Islamic Front Bangladesh, Islami Oikyajote, Oikyabaddha Nagarik Andolan, Krishak Sharmik Janata League and Communist Party of Bangladesh joined the dialogue held at EC seminar room.
During the dialogue, Islami Andolan Bangladesh urged the EC to ban criminal and corrupt people from taking part in the next polls.
Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) Advisor Ashraf Ali Akand said, “Election Commission should take measures to refrain them from getting nomination from any party.”
“We have to stop the tradition of withdrawing cases filed against criminals and corrupt persons considering those as political cases,” he said.
He also urged to change the existing election system.
Ashraf Ali said, “Alternative election system has to be taken to establish political stability, national solidarity and efficient parliament.”
Meanwhile, the party submitted some proposals to Election Commission.
Talking about one of the proposals, EC Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed said, “DCC election has been postponed with the order of the court and we filed petition challenging the court order.”
He said, “Update work of the voter list is underway and draft list will be published in January. We prepared for the DCC election.”
Talking about expatriate’s vote he said, “The expatriates can come to the country and take the facility of becoming a voter any time. But we are yet to prepare for taking their votes.”
According to a news release of the EC, the discussion will be held between November 26 and December 4 at about 10:00 am everyday.
The seven-day long discussion is set to be held on delimitation of election constituencies and updating of the voter lists aiming the upcoming national polls.
EC has invited the ruling party Awami League on November 29 while the main opposition BNP was invited to sit for dialogue on December 2, sources said.
The registered political parties will be invited for talks in phases.
Prior to this, the EC sat with Non Government Organisations, senior journalists and civil society members for the same purpose.
