DHAKA: Drug manufacturing of some 62 pharmaceutical companies has been suspended temporarily for their alleged involvement to producing low quality of drugs in unhygienic environment.

The ministry of health and family welfare informed the matter to parliamentary standing committee on the ministry in the 25th meeting held at the National Parliament Thursday.

Director General of drug administration has also issued show cause notices to them asking why they are manufacturing low quality of drugs in unhygienic environment.

They were asked to reply the notices within next three months.

Chairman of the parliamentary standing committee Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim made the disclosure while talking to journalists after the meeting.

He said, “If these companies fail to produce medicines following the standard of World Health Organization (WTO) within three months, the committee will suggest the government to cancel their licenses.”

However, Selim declined to tell the names of the 62 enlisted companies.

Among others, members of the committee, health and family welfare minister AFM Ruhal Haque, Muhammad Amanullah, Dr MA Mannan, Nazmul Hasan, M Murad Hasan and ZIM Mostafa Ali attended in the meeting.

On April 10, parliamentary standing committee on health and family welfare affairs suggested the government to take action within three months against 62 pharmaceutical companies due to producing low quality of drugs.

In this regard, one-member parliamentary sub-committee, headed by committee member Nazmul Hasan, was formed to investigate into the overall condition of 151 registered drug companies on July 29 in 2009.

The sub-committee submitted the report at the 16th meeting of the committee on July 3 of last year.

The sub-committee recommended for taking legal action against 62 companies.

On March 22 of the year, the government started taking legal action against 27 drug companies for producing poor quality of drugs, which are threat to human life.
