DHAKA: The students of Dhaka University (DU) went on a daylong strike on Thursday demanding immediate announcement of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections.
Shikkharthi Adhikar Manch called the strike in the university campus.
Hundreds of students took position in different points of the campus from morning. A group of students locked the main gate of Kalabhaban.
Meanwhile, the university administration engaged in altercation with the demonstrating students when they tried to unlock the gate.
“The university authority has to declare the date of DUCSU election without delay. Otherwise the students will go for greater movement,” said Nure Alam Durjoy, spokesperson of Shikkharthi Adhikar Manch.
Besides, most of the university buses could not move on the interference of the students.
A good number of police personnel have been deployed in the campus to maintain law-and-order.
DU VC Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique told banglanews, “The matter of holding DUCSU poll is now under trial.”
DU saw its last DUCSU election in the late eighties for one-year tenure amid a different political circumstance as the country at that time was witnessing a growing campaign against autocratic rule.
