ASHULIA (SAVAR): The Readymade garments workers on Sunday morning again took to the street to press demand to the authorities to open the factory that triggered chase and counter chase between them and law enforcers.

Earlier in the morning, thousands of workers started staging demonstration for the seventh consecutive day protesting the authority’s decision of shutting down all factories in Ashulia for an indefinite period.

At one stage, the workers engaged in sporadic clashes with the law enforcing members in different points of the industrial area.

Meanwhile, the agitated workers vandalized four vehicles and threw brick chips on law enforcers.

Police also fired 12 rounds of rubber bullets and tear gas on the worker in order to bring the situation under control.

Vehicular movements on Abdullapur-Baipail road halted from the morning due to the unrest, but it became normal at about 11.30 am, said source.

However, no report of injury was found till filing the report at about 9:30am.

Earlier, the garment exporters Saturday declared closure of all garment factories in Ashulia for an indefinite period from Sunday to avert unrest in the sector.

The announcement came from an emergency press conference of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) held at its office in the city in the evening.

In the press conference, President of the apex trade body that represents the export oriented woven, knit and sweater Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin briefed the journalists.

The workers of readymade garments are staging demonstration from last seven days demanding salary-hike.
