GAZIPUR: Amar Desh acting Editor and former energy adviser of the BNP-led four-party alliance government Mahmudur Rahman was freed from Gazipur district prison Thursday after nine months and 17 days’ confinement.
A large number of BNP leaders and activists received him as he walked to freedom at about 11:30am.
Peshajibi Somonnoy Parishad(Combined Professionals Society) leader Dr AZ Zahid Hossain, filmmaker Chashi Nazrul Islam, general-secretary of the National Press Club Syed Abdal Hossain, columnist Farhad Mazhar, BNP chairpersons’ Press Secretary Maruf Kamal Khan Sohel, journalist Abdul Hi Shikdar, Hasan Uddin Sarkar, JAGPA president Shafiul Alam Prodhan, BNP chairpersons’ adviser MA Mannan, former Inspector-General of Police(IGP) MA Quayum and local leaders of BNP welcomed him at the jail gate.
Earlier on June 2 last year, Mahmud was arrested from his newspaper office in a fraud case filed by Md Hashmat Ali, publisher of the Amar Desh, with Tejgaon police station.
Another case was filed against him with the same police station for manhandling police personnel and obstructing them from discharging their duties during the arrest drive.
Besides, a number of defamation suits were lodged against Mahudur Rahman in different districts across the country.
On August 19 last year, the Supreme Court sentenced Mahmudur Rahman to six months imprisonment for committing a contempt of court.
In 2008, Mahmudur Rahman was appointed Acting Editor of the daily Amar Desh.
