Nahid’s meeting on BUET underway

DHAKA: A mass hunger- strike demonstration of demonstrating teachers and students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) is underway on the campus Monday demanding resignation of the institute’s VC and pro-VC.

On the other hand, the scheduled meeting between Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid and the authorities of BUET began at Education Ministry.

Resigned 20 teachers of the varsity, former Vice-Chancellor and Alumni have joined the meeting.

Nurul Islam Nahid and Education Secretary Kamal Abdel Naser Chowdhury are hearing the teachers’ statement and allegations over ongoing unrest of the BUET.

However, teachers-student are observing token mass hunger strike in front of VC office from 11:30am. Teachers Association president Professor Mujibur Rahman and general secretary Dr. Ashraful Islam joined the demonstration.

Earlier, the education minister has invited all deans, departmental heads and teachers in the meeting to find a way out to resolve the problem.

On Sunday, Nahid also sat in a meeting with University Grants Commission chairman AK Azad Chowdhury, parliamentary standing committee chairman on education affairs Rashed Khan Menon and education secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury at his office.

The crisis occurred in BUET when Teachers’ Association of the university started staging movements to press home their 16-point demand that include mainly the resignation of the VC and Pro-VC.
