Postpone announcement embarrassing: Nahid

DHAKA: Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said the decision of postponing the ongoing demonstration of BUET for two days is embarrassing.

“The decision of postponing the ongoing demonstration for two days for the honor of education minister is embracing. The step will work as another barrier in way to resolving the crisis,” he said.

The education minister came up with the came up with the assertion while taking to journalists in an emergency press conference on Thursday noon.

Regarding the resign en masse issue, the education minister said, “The agitating teachers themselves will decide the matter.”

Earlier on Wednesday, the agitating BUET teachers postponed their ongoing demonstration for two days showing respect to the education minister for his initiative in fulfilling their demands, including resignation of its VC and Pro-VC.

On July 16, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid held a meeting with the senior teachers of the university over the existing crisis.

Emerging from the meeting, he said, “There is no need of movements or hunger strike as the government would take prompt steps to solve existing crisis in Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).”

Calling upon the students to abstain from movements, he said, “Decision will be taken immediately after talking with President and Prime Minister.”

However, the teachers vowed to resign collectively on the same day.

On July 17, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said there is an ill-motive behind the warning of mass resignation of teachers.

“The announcement of mass resignation just 40 minutes after a meeting with teachers has created obstacle to resolve the existing crisis of the university,” he said.

He also said, “The teachers association of the varsity took the decision when we are trying to solve the crisis by consulting with the Prime Minster and the President.”

On the other hand, the teachers said, “The minister was provided with wrong information. His conception on the issue is wrong.”
