DHAKA: Biman Bangladesh Airlines, national flag carrier in the country, will introduce direct air link between Dhaka and Yangon soon though the authority suspended different routes due to huge loss.
There is no direct air service between the two countries. That’s why travelers have to go Yangon through Bangkok.
The initiative will boost up business between neighbors countries, while travelers can go Yangon without hassle.
The Biman Bangladesh Airlines has already suspended Dhaka-Chittagong-Bangkok flight.
Apart from this, Dhaka-Delhi, Dhaka-Karachi, Dhaka-Bangkok, Dhaka-Dubai and Dhaka-Kuwait routes might be suspended.
Biman sources said after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit in Myanmar, Biman is preparing to re-open Dhaka-Yangon route.
Before introducing this direct air link, an advance marketing team of Biman will leave Dhaka in the current month for Myanmar to survey the aviation market.
The resumption of the direct link had to be worked out as soon as possible by the two countries after the Biman Bangladesh Airlines stopped flights between Dhaka and Yangon before 2007 due to the reason of financial losses.
A high official Biman marketing department told banglanews that Biman suspended Dhaka-Yangon flight due to loss in 2007.
Then the Biman operated this flight with F-28 aircraft, which was very costly.
This time Biman will operate Dhaka-Yangon flight through Boeing 737, which would be viable for the national flag carriers he hoped.
After getting marketing team’s report, a proposal will be submitted to the board of directors for approval. “Just after receiving the board’s consent, flight will start within a month,” he added.
Recently, civil aviation and tourism minister M Faruk Khan also disclosed the matter of launching Dhaka-Yangon route in an occasion in the city.
KB Ahmed, President, Bangladesh-Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industry told it’s necessary to introduce air direct link to boost up business between two neighbor countries.
Since 1949, Myanmar has signed bilateral aviation accords with 43 countries and regions.
Some 14 foreign airlines flying Yangon comprise Air China, Thai Airways International, Chaina Southern Airline, Indian Airlines, Silk Air, Qatar Airways, Malaysian Airlines, Mandarin, Bangkok Airways, Jetstar Asia, Phuket Airline, Vietnam Airlines and Thai Air Asia.
