DHAKA: The Earth Hour was observed in the country as elsewhere across the world in a collective display of commitment to a better future for the planet on Saturday night.
But, the event was not responded spontaneously among people of Bangladesh and most of the offices both public and private were found lights on.
Sources said the others electricity-based activities were also as usual.
On March 29, the government urged all to stop using electricity for an hour from 8:30pm in the night showing the country’s support for climate change action in the Earth Hour event.
Energy Adviser to the Prime Minister Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury came up with the urge in a press conference on Earth Hour Campaign, held at PDB Bhavan in the city.
he told the journalists the whole country is likely to be dimmed in darkness for one hour switching off non-essential lights and electric devices to save energy also.
Tawfiq-e-Elahi said, “Keeping the lights off is voluntary, if somebody needs to work, they will definitely turn on the lights or other devices.”
We hope the people of the country would observe ‘Earth Hour’ enthusiastically as it is needed for better future in the country, he added.
Earth Hour, the worldwide event is being organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
Hundreds of millions of people, businesses and governments around the world unite each year to support the largest environmental event in history–Earth Hour.
Over 5,200 cities and towns in 135 countries worldwide switched off their lights for Earth Hour, sending a powerful message for action on climate change.
It also ushered in a new era with members going Beyond the Hour to commit to lasting action for the planet. Without a doubt, it’s shown how great things can be achieved when people come together for a common cause.
