3 cases filed over JU clash

SAVAR, DHAKA: Three cases were filed against over 150 people with Savar and Ashulia Thanas for taking attempt to kill Likhon and hindering police in discharging duty.

Johra Begum, mother of Tahmidul Islam Likhon, filed a case with Savar Thana on Thursday against ten people for taking attempt to kill her son.

Besides, Sub-Inspector of the same thana Sajjad Hossain filed a case against around 140 people for their alleged involvement in attacking and obstructing police.

Sub-Inspector of Ashulia Thana Badrul Alam filed another case with the thana in same allegation against eight people.

Earlier on early Thursday, five students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) were injured as police opened fire on them over arresting a student of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall of the varsity.

The injured are Rakib, of Pharmacy Dept, Bashir, of Statistics Dept, Maruf, of Information Technology Dept, Robin, of Mathematics Dept, and Nahid, of Finance and Banking Dept.

Sources said someone stabbed to injure Tahmidul Islam Likhon, student of Economics Dept, at about 10pm on Wednesday.

Later, Likhon was admitted to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar.

Police went to pick up Nahid, residential student of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall, on suspicion of stabbing Likhon when they locked in a clash with the students of the hall at about 12am.

In the meantime, police opened fire on the students, leaving five injured.

The university authorities claimed that police had not permission to open fire on the students.

Later in the day, student-police clash left at least 30 students, including 7 police and 3 journalists.

The clash erupted when the students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) blockaded Dhaka-Aricha highway protesting the police firing on students that left five injured.

The authorities closed the university till August 25 following the clash.
