DINAJPUR: Four people were drowned in Punarbhaba River while Detective Branch (DB) of Police chased them in Rajapara Bangibecha Ghat of the town on Wednesday night.
The deceased were identified as Jamal Hossain Mini, 40, son of Siddique, Sabuj Mahanta, 35, son of Nitai Mahanta, Awlad Hossain, 36, son of Sambhu Mia and Rashed, 28, son of Ismail Hossain, resided at the district town.
Witnesses told that police chased them while they were playing cards and they jumped into the river avoiding harassment and arrest.
Earlier, Detective Branch (DB) beat up some other youths while playing cards.
That is why, sensing the presence of DB police personnel, they jumped into the river.
Meanwhile, Sub-Inspector Shahin, SI Jahid and nine other police men were closed in this connection.
