Timber smuggler shot dead in Satkhira

SATKHIRA: A timber smuggler was shot to death by the forest rangers in River Batlo of Sundarbans in the district on Thursday morning.

The deceased was identified as Rafiqul Islam, 30, son of Mohammad Ali, of village Matibhamba under Kaira upazila in Khulna.

Forest rangers said a four-member team of rangers opened fire on a timber smugglers gang at about 8am while patrolling river Batlo.

At one stage, smugglers managed to flee the scene. But, rangers found bullet-hit Rafiqul on the spot and rushed him to Shyam Nagar Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.

Confirming the matter, Shyam Nagar thana OC Ameer Toimoor Ali said, “He got bullet wound on his leg and might have died due to over bleeding.”
