BD in turning point in ICT: Sabbin Hasan

DHAKA: Sabbin Hasan is a flamboyant name in ICT journalism in the country and has contributed his writings almost every newspapers in Bangladesh.

His first software ‘Care’ over English grammar based on Bangladeshi education curriculum jolted the domestic and international media as it was published in almost every dailies of the country.

He was enlisted as a young programmer based on education in the world. He is now working at bangldnews24.com as the ICT Editor. He gave an interview with banglanews centering the Bangladesh ICT Journalist Forum (BIJF) election.

Q: What is behind story of setting BJIF?

Sabbin: The organization was formed at the beginning of the century when ICT was not integrated to the mainstream Journalism. However, nowadays, it has become the main concern in all media.

Q: You are the existing financial secretary of BIJF and competing in the next round for the general secretary post. How confident are you for the victory?

Sabbin: Well, I am positive. I have established my image as I am involved in the sector for several years. I think the voters will take the right decision as the ICT journalists are not naive by any means.

Q: Tell us about the country’s present and future of the sector.

Sabbin: The growth of the sector depends on internet user’s frequency. The present figure is 3.20 crore and it will be twice by 2014 as the 3G technology is knocking at the door. Besides, Bangladesh has secured the third place in the world arena at outsourcing. All of these illustrate a brighter future of Bangladesh.

Q: In that case, how do you evaluate the contribution of the ICT journalism?

Sabbin: ICT journalism is working relentlessly to bring pace to the ‘Digital Bangladesh’ roadmap taken by the government. That’s why we need experienced persons in the organizing body of BIJF.

Q: How do you expect BIJF to nourish the sector?

Sabbin: The world scenario says Bangladesh is now standing on a pivotal and turning point. In that context, BIJF election is very important. I want BIJF to literate every person in the country as ICT is termed as the knowledge industry. BIJF can serve great job by conducting this knowledge to the drawing rooms of the countrymen. A wide range of old members of BIJF really want to do it.

Q: Who are the candidates for other posts?

Sabbin: Total number of candidates is 12 while seven of them have been selected without competition. ICT in-charge of the Daily Ittefaq Mozahidul Islam and Senior Sub Editor Mohammad Khan of the Daily Kalerkantho are fighting for the president post.

Q: Say something about your advent in ICT journalism.

Sabbin: I have been browsing the sector since 2000. My first work ‘Care’ over English grammar based on Bangladeshi education curriculum jolted the media as it was published in almost every dailies of the country. The phenomenon inspired me to walk for ICT journalism. I joined the Daily Samakal in 2005 and then in banglanews in 2010.

Q: Is there any electoral update?

Sabbin: The election is scheduled to hold on August 11 at BCS office around 10:00am. The candidate introducing meeting will be held on August 4 prior the election. Mostafa Jabbar will perform as the chairman of the election board in the election.
