DHAKA: The World Population Day is being observed in the country as elsewhere around the globe on Wednesday.
This year’s theme for the day is: “Universal Access to Reproductive Health Services”.
Different government and non-government organizations have chalked out various programmes to mark the day.
As per health ministry data, Bangladesh’s population stands at 15.10 crore and population growth rate is 1.34 percent.
Following the demographic trend, within 50 years the population of Bangladesh will reach a staggering figure of 30:20 crore.
President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have issued separate messages on the occasion.
President Zillur Rahman said, “Population growth is still a matter of grate challenge in developing countries, including Bangladesh due to various social, economical and cultural reasons. But, our government is working to improve the situation by empowering women and creating awareness against population growth among rural people.”
In her speech, Sheikh Hasina said, “The present government has implemented a number of policies in education, population and social security sectors in a bid to make the population management a success.”
She urged people to move forward in order to protect mother and child health.
