DHAKA: Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta MP, minister without portfolio, categorically said his party would call peaceful hartal like other countries of the world when they would be in opposition.
The senior leader of the party came up with the assertion in a mourning meeting of late AL leader Bahauddin Chowdhury at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity in the city Thursday.
He said, “Hartal is democratic right until it kills people, torches or vandalizes vehicles.”
Regarding threat given by BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed to oust the government through mass upsurge if caretaker government is not restored, the veteran AL leader added: “Mass upsurge is not easy.”
The senior lawmaker said the CG system would not be restored and the next general election will be held on October in 2013.
The mourning meeting was also addressed, among others, by president of Bangladesh Workers’ Party Rashed Khan Menon and vice president of Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote ATM Shamsuzzaman.
