DHAKA: Some 217 employees of GrameePhone (GP), a leading mobile-phone operator of the country, have lost their job so far in the ongoing retrenchment process.
Of the employees, 41 were women including three pregnant staffs.
Chief communication officer of the mobile-phone Kazi Monirul Kabir admitted the fact at a press conference in a city hotel on Monday afternoon.
In response to a query whether the test during pregnancy was humane, the communication officer said, “It was a part of termination process.”
He also admitted that no notice was issued before termination.
Monirul added: “We did not have sufficient time. So, we could not issue notice to many employees before sacking. They were provided proper compensation for that.”
GrameenPhone head of regulatory affairs Mahmud Hossain said the company has recruited more than the number of sacked employees. “It is a part of company’s reformation process,” he said.
Earlier on Sunday, Kazi Monirul Kabir told banglanews that GP has terminated 120 employees so far.
Among others, GP head of corporate communication Tahamid Azizul Haque was present at the press conference.
Earlier, the authority of GrameenPhone declared a general leave for Sunday following its staffs’ demonstration protesting the ongoing termination threat.
The angry officials and staffs of GrameenPhone staged demonstration in front of GP Headquarters on that day.
On July 4, the committee was formed in order to protest the ongoing termination process in the company.
Terming the ongoing termination process as illegal, the employees distributed leaflets to press home their five-point demands on the same day.
Meanwhile, they demanded trial of those who are involved with the illegal process.
