DHAKA: The standing committee of main opposition BNP, the party’s highest policymaking body, has threatened to call hartal on Tuesday if the detained 18-party alliance top leaders are not released by Sunday and the permission for June 11 rally is not given by Monday.
The decision came from a meeting of the standing committee, chaired by Khaleda Zia in the chair on Saturday night, at her Gulshan party office.
The standing committee has condemned ‘production warrant’ against the detained top leaders who secured bail from the Supreme Court a few days back.
“The meeting decided to hold Monday’s mass rally in front of the party’s central office at Naya Paltan if the government does not give permission to hold it at the venues sought by the parties applying to the authorities concerned,” said BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan.
The meeting also condemned the failure of the government to find out missing BNP leader M Ilias Ali and his car driver.
The BNP leaders demanded their safe return to their families.
Moreover, main opposition BNP Chief Whip Zainul Abdin Farroque is set to visit the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Benazir Ahmed at his office on Sunday morning in a bid to discuss about the venue of June 11 rally.
Party sources said a five-member delegation of BNP led by Farroque is scheduled to reach at the DMP headquarters at about 10am.
Earlier on Thursday and Saturday, Farroque went to DMP office, but he did not meet with the commissioner.
Under the circumstances, BNP is yet to get the permission of holding rally and using mike.
BNP delegation will meet Benazir for holding talks on these issues.
