DHAKA: Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said the education minister and University Grants Commission sent letters to all public universities of the country to open Oceanology Department in the current session.

The minister came up with the disclosure while replying to a query from a lawmaker in the question-hour of the national parliament.

He said, “The government has already opened the department in Chittagong University.”

The ruling Awami League lawmaker said, “But, we will open the department in all public universities, including Dhaka University in the running session. Hopefully, the decision will be implemented within next two to three years.”

In response to a query of Hasanul Haque Inu, he said, “The government brought some 1,624 private schools, colleges and madrasas under MPO system in 2010.”

“But, we failed to bring new educational institutes under the system due to lack of fund in fiscal 2011-12. We are trying to bring new organizations under the system in future,” he said

Replying to another query of Fazilatunnesa Bappi, he said, “A total of 9,722 teachers are working in 34 public universities across the country.”  Some 18.20 lakh students are studying in those universities, he said.

Besides, 9,610 teachers are working in 60 private universities while 2.19 lakh students are studying.
