CHITTAGONG: The half-day hartal, called by Chittagong metropolitan Jamaat-e-Islami, was observed on Wednesday.
The pickets remained active from the morning to make the hartal successful.
Besides, police held five Shibir activists along with two petrol-bombs from Muradpur and Chakbazar area at about 8:00am.
On the other hand, some 16 picketers were held from different areas of the city.
Earlier, a Chittagong Court on Tuesday again sent the Metropolitan Jamaat Ameer lawmaker ANM Shamsul Islam to jail by rejecting his bail appeal in an arson case.
Jamaat-e-Islami called hartal from 6:00am to 12:00pm in protest against sending ANM Shamsul Isam to jail under Speedy Trial Act.
Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate M Mahbubur Rahman passed the order in response to a petition filed by the state prosecutor.
Earlier on Monday, he was granted ad-interim bail till June 5.
On May 13, ANM Shamsul Islam was accused in a case under Speedy Trial Act following a clash between police and BNP-Jamaat activists.
