DHAKA: Bangladesh power development board Chairman Alamgir kabir said twenty one lakh new power connections and the Boro crops season have created the current crisis of electricity and load shading in the country.
He came up with the information while talking to banglanews after emerging from a seminar on “Success of the present government in power sector” in New York on Thursday evening.
The seminar was organized by the US Awami League.
He told banglanews, “The bureaucratic red tape is the basic problem for the development of this sector.”
Seeking freedom from the bureaucracy, he said, “The government must need to select the professionals for any specific sector for the real development.”
Meanwhile, he referred US as an example to overcome the power crisis through appointing the professionals.
He said, “Hopefully Bangladesh will meet the power demand by 2013. 500mw power will be produced by 2015 and 2000mw by 2020.”
Regarding the issue of private power sector, Alamgir Kabir said, “Currently the government has given 46% to the private sector which is very positive for the betterment of this sector. PDB gas already signed 50 agreements in private power sector.”
Replying to query about Khulna power project, PDB chairman said, “It will not create any negative impact as it is 60km away from the world heritage and 14 km from the sundarbans.”
He urged everyone to strictly avoid missuse of power.
