DHAKA: Some 20 BNP leaders, including party’s acting secretary general Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, are set to be freed soon, said a jail source.
Senior jail supers Jahangir Alam and Abdur Razzak of Kashimpur Jail and Jailer Subash Chandra Ghosh confirmed the matter to banglanews Thursday.
Earlier in the day, a Dhaka court granted bail to 15 leaders of BNP-led 18-party alliance, including Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, until July 26 in a case filed for cocktail explosion at the secretariat during hartal.
Besides, the court has withdrawn Production Warrant (PW) against them.
Metropolitan Magistrate Jahurul Islam passed the order following a bail petition around 11:15am.
On June 7, the High Court granted bail to 30 leaders of 18-party, including BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, in a vehicle torching case.
On May 27, the High Court granted bail for six months to five opposition MPs accused in the case.
They are BNP lawmakers MK Anwar, Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie and Barrister Mahbubuddin Khokon, LDP president Col (retd) Oli Ahmad MP and BJP chairman Andalib Rahman Partho MP.
On May 21, Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Erfanullah framed charges against the front-raking leaders of the BNP-led 18-party alliance in the case.
Turning down their bail prayers, the same court on May 16 sent the opposition leaders to jail on their surrender in compliance with the High Court order.
