FROM RANGPUR: Just elected Mayor of the newly formed Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) Awami League leader Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu, in his instant reaction after he swept in, said that this victory is against the evil power, this is the victory of the people of Rangpur.
When he was declared unofficially elected on Thursday night Jhantu told this to Banglanews.
He told, “I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Rangpur city dwellers for electing me. They fought against the evil power through selecting their own man. I am grateful to them.”
The Mayor told, “I will remain active so that no evil power raises its head. I have nothing to get in my personal life. To serve the people will be my motto.”
He said, “My only aim will be to go ahead with the neglected people of Rangpur.”
Being an Awami League leader would you meet the Prime Minister when asked, he told that “I am not an Awami League leader.”
Jhantu further told that, “I worked for Rangpur Pourashava so the people have evaluated me. I have decided to dedicate my life for the people as they have made me victor.”
About unemployment problem he told that, “I will solve the problem by creating employment opportunities. If this unemployment problem goes then the drug problem and criminal activities will be reduced.”
About gas line installation he told that, “For generating employment opportunities we need to bring gas in Rangpur. Gas pipe line has reached to Gobindaganj. But there is conspiracy to divert it to Dinajpur. I will wage movement with the people to bring the gas line to Rangpur.”
In reply to a question about his future relation with Ershad, he told “ If he (Ershad) works for Rangpur , I will be with him. Besides, I will keep good relations with everyone.”
Jhantu was elected by defeating his nearest rival expelled Jatiyo Party leader Mostafizar Rahman by a margin of 28 thousand 450 votes.
The results of 178 centers showed that the citizens’ committee nominated candidate Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu with Motor Cycle symbol secured 1 lakh 6 thousand 255 votes.
Expelled Jatiyo Party leader and now Trinamool Jatiyo party candidate with Duck symbol Mostafizar Rahman got 77 thousand 805 votes.
The casting began on Thursday morning from 8:00 am and continued till 4:00 pm.
According to Election Commission sources, there are a total of 3 lakh 57 thousand 742 voters. Of them 1 lakh 79 thousand 128 are male and 1 lakh 78 thousand 614 are female.
Though there were no Jatiyo party or BNP supported candidate in poll race, 12 in mayor post and 408 candidates contested in councilor posts.
