DHAKA: Kolkata Knight Riders for the first time won the Indian Premier League (IPL)-2012 trophy defeating Chennai Super Kings by 5 wickets in their final match on Sunday.
In response to Chennai-set 191-run target, Kolkata scored 192 for five with 2 balls remaining.
Earlier, Chennai scored 190 for 3. Opener Michael Hussey took 54, Murali Vijay 42 and Suresh Raina 73 runs.
Bhatia bagged Vijay`s wicket because of Shakib Al Hasan`s outstanding catch. Jacques Kallis and Shakib later send Hussey and Raina to pavilion.
After seventy-two league games, and three playoff matches, the final match held at the Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Man of the Match Manvinder Bisla said, “Feeling very happy, I played my part, Brendon is a class player, his record speaks for himself, due to Balaji`s injury, we had to leave him out, I am lucky I got a chance, Till the last ball, it did not feel like we had made it.”
Brendon McCullum said, “Pretty satisfied. We have had four hard years. To come out in tough conditions and chase 195 against CSK is very satisfying. People back in Kolkata and Bengal will be proud of us. We have been relaxed the whole way through. We never lost the belief in our own abilities.”
Player of the series Sunil Narine said, “Coming in a big tournament and having a big impact is huge. But it is about 11 players.”
Shakib Al Hasan said, “I don’t think we will be able to sleep tonight. I think Shah Rukh has gone mad. I don’t know what he is doing.”
The coach of KKR, Wasim Akram told, “I have won World Cup for Pakistan, but this is very different feeling. I am very happy. Knowing our owner SRK, it is going to be a madhouse.”
While Shah Rukh Khan said, “I want to thank Gautam and my boys.”
Kolkata Knight Riders, the most consistent team so far in IPL 2012, faced the toughest challenge yet against the two-time champions, who have peaked at just the right time.
