Extinguishing Flames and Beyond…

Lack of implementation of law in the RMG sector is widespread. The rules, regulations and the provision of law are widely being violated in this sector causing immeasurable death and loss of lives and property.

Recently burnt Tazreen fashions has more than a thousand workers. As per the provision of the law, this factory must have three exit doors for the employee. So far could be known, the factory had three exits. But the fact is that all three exits were remained closed at the time of the fire broke out.

The management of the factory forced the employee to stay inside closing the door while fire was about to burn them. It is expected that the fact will be exposed and the perpetrators will be brought to justice.

A photo by our newsportal shown that a fire extinguisher has also been burnt at this incident. Why was it happened? At the moment while the whole factory was about to turn into ashes, the fire extinguisher was kept right at the place. It gives the message that either the extinguisher was out of order or the employee(s) did not know the usage of the extinguisher.

In this particular case, probably the both are true considering the factory scenario of country. It is not only in our

RMG sector, but also in other sector that in most cases the provision of the fire extinguisher is not materialized. Most factories and offices does not have fire extinguishers and unfortunately most of those who maintains the provision do not train the employees of the using the extinguisher. The result is obvious.

Another thing is that every floor of Tazreen had one extinguisher which, if so, is the clear violation of the law. Any factory having floor space at least 5,500 sft must have one fire extinguisher. The record says that Tazreen has a floor space of about 1,5000 sft. At least three extinguishers were supposed to exit in every floor which was not maintained so far. However, the investigation will reveal the fact.

In addition to this, every factory must have 25% trained employee to operate the extinguisher. This should be 100% in reality. But this factory did not meet that requirement. It did not have enough employees to operate the extinguisher while the extinguishers were not functional let alone the helmet of musk.

It is better to be too late to be aware about the basic requirement of the law and to save ourselves from the all-encompassing misrule, violation and disregard.
