DHAKA: Opposition BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed Sunday said the government should resign over the incident of cancellation of the proposed fund by World Bank (WB) for constructing much-talked-about Padma Bridge.

The leader of the party came up with the assertion while addressing a discussion meeting at the National Press Club.

Expressing his discontent, he said, “The World Bank has cancelled fund for constructing Padma Bridge bringing allegation of corruption. The incident proved that the government is champion in committing corruption.”

Mentioning that the government has stigmatized the nation by committing such offence, he said, “The World Bank is giving us financial assistance from last 40 years. But, the issue has broken all previous records. The government should resign for this.”

Criticizing the corruption of the ruling party members, he said, “The government did not take any action against former communications minister Abul Hossain and rail minister Suranjit Sengupta in spite of having evidences of their corruptions. Still they are in cabinet. It’s a common feature of Awami League.”

The opposition leader, meanwhile, claimed that the government has to be accountable to people for their each corruption.

Indicating Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the former law minister said, “Your people will commit more corruption if they come in power again.”  “Nobody gives you positive advice. All of them are involved with corruption. But, they claimed that BNP will commit corruption after assuming power,” he said.
