BARISAL: A Swechchha Sebak League activist was allegedly torture to death by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in ward no. 10 in the city on Sunday evening.
The victim was identified as Shahabuddin Khan Sabur, 50, an activist of city Swechchha Sebak League and OMS dealer.
Family source said a team of the elite force raided the house of Sabu at about 7:30pm and started interrogating him inside a room of his rented house for about one hour.
Later, his sister forcefully entered inside the room as she could not get any response from him and recovered him lying on the floor.
He was rushed to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
Medical source said he died of heart attack.
Sabu’s wife alleged, “Sabu was a cardiac patient. RAB members kicked him on his chest, leaving him dead. Meanwhile, they looted Tk. 25, 0000 and gold ornaments from our house.”
Regarding the allegation, RAB-8 company commander Major Rashedul Haque said, “RAB held a man along with 260 pieces of yaba tablets. Later, on the basis of the information provided by the detainee, RAB raided the house of Sabu and found him lying on the floor.”
“We immediately asked his family members to take him to hospital”, he added.
