DHAKA: The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) police authorities suspended nine cops and closed an assistant commissioner, for torturing three photojournalists of a national daily during covering a demonstration at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Saturday.
The DMP, meanwhile, formed a one-member committee comprising a joint police commissioner Sahabuddin Koreshi to look into the incident, police sources said.
The suspended cops are Sub-Inspector Zahir, Assistant Sub-inspectors Shafiq and Nazmul and six constables--Motiur, Razzak, Shajahan, Joynal, Ratan and Jahangir.
Earlier in the day, police assaulted three photojournalists of the daily Prothom Alo--Khaled Sarkar, Sajid Hossain and Zahidul Karim--while capturing photographs of a demonstration of Women Polytechnic College in the city and injured them critically.
They were rushed to National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) in the city.
