BARISAL: An oil-laden vessel capsized in the Meghna River after collided head-on with a cargo vessel in Mehendiganj upazila on Wednesday night.
Mehendiganj Thana OC Reaz Hossain told banglanews, “A Dhaka-bound oil-laden vessel tanker MV Meherzan with 7,000 litres of oil collided head on with a Chittagong-bound MV Fazlul Haque-3 at Gabindapur Kaliganj point at night and the oil carrying vessel capsized in the river with 14 crewmembers on board.”
Nizam Uddin, a staff of the oil tanker, went missing following the incident while others managed to swim ashore.
Police are conducting salvage operation to rescue him.
The crew of MV Meherjan took shelter at MV Fazlul Haque-3 but all its crew fled away the scene after the incident.
Police has been deployed to ensure security of the cargo boat.
Rescue vessels Hamza and Rustom are on the way to the spot from Khulna and Dhaka respectively.
